What: Virtual Mental Health Series
When: Tuesday, March 9, 23 and 30, from 6-7:15 p.m.
The Institute of Living’s Family Resource Center is hosting a virtual Mental Health Series in March to raise awareness and provide education about depression, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia.
Depression is a serious mood disorder that can impact sleep, eating habits and ability to focus or complete work tasks. For a formal depression diagnosis, symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
In this free webinar, Introduction to Depression, join the Institute of Living’s Family Resource Center to learn more about the diagnosis of depression and how family and friends can be supportive to individuals living with the disorder. It will be on Tuesday, March 9, from 6-7:15 p.m.
The second in the series, Introduction to Anxiety Disorders, will offer helpful information about anxiety disorders and how family and friends can be supportive to individuals living with anxiety. It will be on Tuesday, March 23, from 6-7:15 p.m.
Anxiety disorders involve excessive fear or anxiety, can be generalized anxiety disorder, or panic attacks or other phobia-related disorders. They are common and affect nearly 30 percent of adults at some point in their lives.
The third informational webinar, Managing Schizophrenia, also will offer helpful information about the diagnosis of schizophrenia, ways to manage it and ways to offer support. The session will be Tuesday, March 30, from 6-7:15 p.m.
Globally, 3.2 percent to 7 percent of youth have early symptoms of schizophrenia or psychosis. Some will go on to develop other mental health conditions, such as depression or bipolar disorder, while others will manage the symptoms on their own or seek professional help.
All of these webinars are free, but registration is required.
What: What You Should Know About Inherited Cardiovascular Disorders
When: Tuesday, March 9, 7-8 p.m.

In this free, live webinar session, join genetic counselor Emily Smith, MS, LCGC, and Director of the Inherited Cardiovascular Disease Program Adaya Weissler-Snir, MD, CCEP, to learn about cardiovascular genetics, signs and symptoms, and tailored treatment and care plans at the Inherited Cardiovascular Disease Program at Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute. A live question-and-answer session with the experts will follow the presentation.
Genetic cardiovascular disorders can include inherited heart muscle diseases, such as certain kinds of cardiomyopathy; familial rhythm disorders, such as Long QT syndrome or Brugada syndrome; aortic or vascular diseases; or congenital heart defects and syndromes. The program offers genetic testing and diagnostics, as well as counseling.
